Pluribus Episode 6 is now available on Apple TV – and, amid its various talking points, viewers expressed shock and delight at what some have dubbed the “cameo of the year.”
Titled “HDP,” the latest chapter of the Apple TV Original features a completely unexpected appearance from a major star. And, if their appearance wasn’t surprising enough, it turns out their scene-stealing role had been announced weeks ago.
Wait, is that John Cena in episode 6 of Pluribus?
Yeah! About 19 minutes later Pluribus“Last entry, Carol sees a video that offers an explanation for what a shocked Carol found in Pluribus final scene of episode 5. You can read more about this horrific discovery in this Pluribus Episode 6 semi-recap article.
Anyway, as the recording begins, none other than beloved wrestler-turned-actor John Cena suddenly appears on screen. What follows is a nearly three-minute monologue during which Cena – who, like 99.99% of humanity, was not immune to the virus that caused The Joining – gives Carol some important details about the aforementioned discovery.
Unsurprisingly, Apple TV viewers flocked to social media platforms, including X/Twitter, and other sites like the ResetEra forums and r/Pluribus, to share their reactions to Cena’s wild appearance.
“I love completely unexpected celebrity cameos,” wrote Redditor ialo00130, before adding, “This one confused me for a few seconds before the laughter set in.” On ResetEra, user dphrygian said “John Cena’s cameo was an amazing choice,” while forum regular Dalek simply typed, “Holy shit this cameo.”
Meanwhile, some people, who are also fans of Cena’s most notable role as Peacemaker in the now-defunct DC Universe (DCU) and DC Extended Universe, have had fun linking his appearance in one of the best Apple TV shows to his role in said comic book franchises.
“Dude, they got Peacemaker,” ResetEra user CM_Ace wrote, while Redditor this_was_hard_to_do said, “someone needs to edit the file. [Peacemaker] season 2 intro right after this line” in response to jboosmeezy commenting on the actor saying “we are John Cena” as part of his opening gambit.
Oddly enough, Cena actually foreshadowed his appearance on the sci-fi mystery drama a few weeks earlier.
On Instagram in late November, Cena uploaded an image of Rhea Seahorn’s protagonist from his pilot episode. The image was not accompanied by a caption, which sparked many responses from her followers about the meaning of the said photograph. Well, now we have our answer.
Speaking on the latest episode of the official Pluribus podcast, showrunner Vince Gilligan also revealed how the cameo came about.
Long story short: Cena filmed it on a rare day off, released his multi-page monologue in his first take – Gilligan asked for two more, so he would have more takes to choose from, though – and, before they went their separate ways, told Gilligan he couldn’t wait to see the episode so Cena could understand what he had just talked about.
With the arrival of Cena You better call Saul star Patrick Fabian on the Pluribus list of cameos, some are now wondering who the next famous face to appear will be. Until now, I would have told someone Break the bad but, after Cena’s wild appearance, I’ll take anyone at this point.
