Shehbaz Sharif clears power initiatives from Gwadar and Britain

Authorities plan immediate steps to improve energy access in Gwadar and Britain as part of broader power sector reforms

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday approved power projects for Gwadar and Gilgit-Baltistan while chairing a meeting on ongoing power sector reforms.

The Prime Minister has authorized immediate implementation of a comprehensive plan to resolve power supply issues in the port city of Gwadar. He said uninterrupted power supply would support national economic activity and investments, adding that improved facilities would help Gwadar Port become a major hub for future economic activity.

Sharif also ordered that work should begin immediately on a 100 MW solar project in Gilgit-Baltistan to ensure stable supply of clean electricity. He said the well-being and economic development of the region remains among the federal government’s top priorities and steps are being taken to promote industrial activity, investment and broader economic development there.

The Prime Minister welcomed the recommendations of the committee headed by Federal Minister Ahsan Iqbal and the Ministry of Power on resolving electricity issues, and tasked the ministry to ensure effective implementation of the overall strategy covering immediate, short-term and long-term measures.

The officials informed the meeting that steps were being taken to ensure electricity supply to domestic and commercial consumers in Gwadar. The meeting was further informed that the government would provide land, communication, infrastructure and other necessary facilities for power projects in Gilgit-Baltistan within the stipulated time.
