- UK hardware sales data available for Black Friday period
- PS5 consoles surged, accounting for 62% market share
- The Switch 2 was also a success, although Xbox consoles lag behind
There was plenty of appetite for game console sales during last month’s Black Friday sales event. And we now have some UK consumer data to check.
Hardware sales data provided by market research firm NielsenIQ (as reported by The Game Business) indicates that console sales in the UK increased by 7% in units and 14% in total revenue.
Unsurprisingly, the PlayStation 5 family of consoles generated the lion’s share of console sales during the Black Friday period, accounting for a staggering 62%. This is largely due to the incredibly deep discounts Sony has applied to its consoles, with an average sale price of £340.
On average, Sony has discounted PS5 Slim consoles with included disc drive by about 21%, and the PS5 Slim Digital Edition by about 34%. The PS5 Pro has also dropped to a new low of £586, over £100 less than its retail price of £699.99.
Nintendo also had a good performance with the Switch 2 console. It accounted for around 23% of hardware unit sales. Nintendo’s console discounts were nowhere near as aggressive as Sony’s, but shoppers still managed to save on consoles and bundles with an average sale price of £405.
The Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S consoles lagged behind the competition, accounting for around 10% of hardware sales over the Black Friday period. The lack of appetite for Microsoft’s consoles after such price hikes is probably the main culprit, but savings were possible; Shoppers spent an average of £385 on Xbox consoles, showing the cheaper Series S was likely more popular during the sale period.
