- The Samsung Galaxy Ring 2 is in danger, as Samsung is reportedly reevaluating its strategy
- It will not appear at next year’s Samsung Galaxy Unpacked presentation
- This would be in response to poor sales and a legal dispute with Oura.
When it launched in 2024, the Samsung Galaxy Ring generated a lot of excitement. This is a bold move by Samsung that seems to be paying off, as the products are being sold for pre-order in some regions. It was also very well reviewed – we named it our best smart ring, for example.
However, things seem to be at a standstill. English-language Korean website Koreajoongang Daily reports that “industry sources” indicate that the Samsung Galaxy Ring 2 will not appear at next year’s Unpacked presentation, which usually takes place around January/February.
In fact, there may not be a Samsung Galaxy Ring 2 at all, as strong pre-order interest ultimately resulted in what the site calls “disappointing sales.” Last year, Sammobile reported that demand was so high for Galaxy Rings that Samsung increased production, adding 600,000 more units to ship worldwide.
It now appears that if the above reports are true (and it’s worth taking these unsubstantiated rumors with a large pinch of salt), Samsung has overestimated mainstream demand, with the rush for pre-orders perhaps limited to Samsung power and early adopters.
Oura’s legal dispute
Samsung’s main competitor in this space is Oura, creator of the Oura Ring 4. Oura has been producing smart rings since before they were cool, and now with challengers appearing in the space, it wants to establish itself as the first and only option.
Oura’s has filed a complaint with the International Trade Commission against Samsung, Reebok and other smart ring makers for patent infringement, following a successful lawsuit against Ringconn and Circular.
It is not surprising that Samsung would want to wait for the outcome of the litigation before launching internationally a product that may violate copyright law. Waiting could save Samsung money and avoid having to go back or recall products down the line.
The State of Smart Rings
As we approach 2026, the smart ring category finds itself in a strange position: despite several high-profile releases in 2024 and continued software innovation from Oura (we even named the Oura Ring 4 our health and fitness device of the year), smart rings aren’t showing too many signs of hardware innovation.
These products are basically a few sensors attached to a rechargeable battery in a nice package, and that’s basically the same for most smart rings these days. Ringconn and Circular can no longer do business in the United States thanks to Oura’s lawsuit, and if Oura has its way, there won’t be a Galaxy Ring 2 either.
One that bucks the trend is the small-batch Pebble Index 01, which is a completely different use case: a microphone and small button designed as an external memory bank and voice assistant, rather than a health tracker.
