Quentin Tarantino is one of Hollywood’s most outspoken characters, and in a recent appearance in The Bret Easton Ellis PodcastTHE pulp Fiction The director made a surprise revelation about his favorite films of the 21st century.
When assigning one film per director, Tarantino cited that of Sofia Coppola Lost in translationthat of Christopher Nolan Dunkirkand that of Edgar Wright Shaun of the Dead among his 10 best films of the last two decades (so far). And at the top of the pile? Ridley Scott’s 2001 war film black hawk shot.
Produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, black hawk shot recounts the 1993 Battle of Mogadishu, in which U.S. forces were caught in a deadly ambush while trying to extract the top lieutenant of a Somali warlord. The film received widespread criticism at the time of its release and won two Academy Awards at the 2002 Academy Awards (Best Film Editing and Best Sound), but Tarantino’s claim that black hawk shot is a millennium “masterpiece” that certainly surprised fans.
“Look, Ridley Scott is a brilliant director and it’s a great movie,” Bruckheimer told me. “It captures the essence of that time period and takes you into that world. F1 is a treatment film, and black hawk shot is a process film, because it takes you into a world you’ll hopefully never be a part of, and shows you how it actually works.
“And the authenticity that Ridley managed to make [Black Hawk Down] was amazing. I think it’s a great film, so I’m lucky to be able to be a part of it.
For reference, Tarantino said that initially he didn’t think about it. black hawk shot as a masterpiece, but after several reshoots he came to appreciate the technical brilliance and staying power of the film.
“I loved it when I first saw it, but I actually think it was so intense that it stopped working for me, and I didn’t carry it with me like I should have,” he said in the podcast episode. “Since then, I’ve seen it several times, not many times, but I think it’s a masterpiece, and one of the things that I love so much about this film is that… it’s the only film that is really aimed at a Apocalypse now sense of purpose, visual effect and sensation.
“And I think he achieves that. He maintains the intensity for two hours, forty-five minutes, or whatever, and I watched it again recently; my heart was going through the entire length of the film. It held me and never let go, and I hadn’t seen it in a while. The feat of directing is beyond extraordinary.”
Incidentally, black hawk shot is currently streaming for free on Kanopy and Hoopla in the US (UK and Australian viewers aren’t so lucky).
F1: The movie begins streaming on Apple TV from December 12.
