Senate body calls on NGOs about personnel rules

Recommends establishing BISP centers in well-known and easily accessible locations

ISLAMABAD:

Expressing serious concerns over their personnel policies, a Senate committee on Friday summoned non-governmental organizations (NGOs) working with the Ministry of Poverty Alleviation.

He also asked the Finance Division to explain why anti-poverty departments cannot hire people on a contractual basis while field operations require flexible labor arrangements.

The Senate Standing Committee on Poverty Alleviation and Social Security met on Friday to deliberate on a wide range of budgetary and regulatory issues relating to the Benazir Income Support Program (BISP) and Pakistan Bait-ul-Mal.

The meeting, chaired by Senator Sardar Al Haj Muhammad Umer Gorgaij, was attended by Senators Rubina Qaim Khani, Abdul Shakoor Khan, Dost Ali Jeesar and Jan Muhammad.

A 20 percent reduction in stunting among children in Balochistan has been reported. The BISP chairman insisted that all eligible children be registered under the same initiative.

He was informed that any child with a score up to 60 could be included in the Benazir Nashonuma programme.

The committee was informed that 80 BISP centers are currently operational across Balochistan.

However, it has been observed that several BISP offices operate from private premises, making it difficult for the public to locate them. It was therefore recommended that BISP centers should be established in well-known and easily accessible locations.
