Iranian authorities once again arrested Nobel Peace Prize winner Narges Mohammadi during a ceremony in honor of the late Iranian lawyer Khosrow Alikordi on Friday, December 12, 2025.
The Mashhad-based lawyer was found dead in questionable circumstances, with authorities describing his death as having been caused by a heart attack.
The Narges Foundation released a statement calling for the immediate release of the 53-year-old activist.
Their statement read: “The Narges Foundation calls for the immediate and unconditional release of all those detained who attended a memorial ceremony to pay their respects and show solidarity. »
They added that the violent repression carried out by security and police forces against the ceremony constitutes a serious violation of fundamental freedoms.
The human rights activist was serving a 13-year, nine-month prison sentence on charges of propaganda against the state and its government and for supporting nationwide protests that saw women defy government orders to wear the hijab.
She was granted three weeks’ leave due to her state of health; however, his release from prison was prolonged under external pressure.
The activist is a heart patient, having suffered several heart attacks during her imprisonment before undergoing surgery in 2022, her supporters said.
It remains unclear whether authorities will send Narges back to prison to serve the remainder of her sentence or if she will face a retrial.
