21 Savage, the British rapper, revealed that he once tried to prevent Drake from getting into a risky situation with Kendrick Lamar who later took over the rap scene.
While speaking on the Prospects with the bank podcast, the rapper said he warned Drake not to respond when things started to get heated with Lamar.
He told her, “You’ll end up getting into a battle you can’t win. You can’t win.”
Savage also said he advised Drake “not to do all that bullshit” and to “leave that bullshit alone.”
Even with that warning, the rapper said he understood the Which the hitmaker’s state of mind.
Drake felt pushed and wanted to respond with his words. Still, Savage thought the whole battle was pointless.
He explained: “Even if you win, you still don’t win. The only difference is when you’re at the top… where does victory fit in? You can’t become number one, point one. So how the hell could you win, anyway?”
Many fans felt that Lamar came out on top, especially after his track Not Like Us became a major hit.
However, Savage didn’t think Drake was seriously affected: “No. I feel like he took a hit on the internet,” he said, adding that online attention also determines streaming numbers.
The drama was later taken to court, as Drake sued his own label, Universal Music Group, for defamation over the release and promotion of Not Like Us.
In October, a New York judge threw out the case.
Judge Jeannette Vargas ruled the song was part of a heated rap exchange and not defamation.
Universal Music Group welcomed the decision and said the trial should never have happened.
The company said it would continue to support Drake and promote his music.
