Patriots heartbroken after Brown University shooting

THE New England Patriots The organization said it was “heartbroken” by the shooting at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, which left at least two people dead and nine others injured.

Police said a the person of interest was in custody early Sunday after the incident. The person was apprehended at a hotel in Coventry but was not immediately identified. Col. Oscar Perez, Providence police chief, said the person arrested was in his 30s.

“The New England Patriots are heartbroken by the horrific events at Brown University,” the team said.

“We extend our deepest condolences to those affected and their families, and we remain grateful to the first responders and law enforcement who acted quickly to protect students, faculty, staff and the community.

“We stand with Brown University and our Rhode Island neighbors during this difficult time.”

The Patriots will face the Buffalo Bills on Sunday afternoon. Gillette Stadium is located approximately 25 miles from Brown University.

The Bills were staying at a hotel near the Ivy League school. Staff and players were safe, The Athletic reported.

Brown University has fielded more than 50 NFL players. Bills defensive tackle Michael Hoecht is the only Brown player still in the league. He’s on injured reserve.

University officials on Sunday canceled all classes, exams and assignments for the remainder of the fall semester. The school said students were free to leave to return home. Those who remained will have access to services and supports, Provost Francis Doyle said in a statement.
