Chris “Mad Dog” Russo took the time Wednesday to criticize Kansas City Chiefs star tight end Travis Kelce for not speaking to the press following the team’s 16-13 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers, where quarterback Patrick Mahomes tore his ACL to end his season.
Russo even incorporated Kelce’s popular podcast “New Heights” into the process.
During a segment on ESPN’s “First Take,” Russo was furious that Kelce didn’t take the time to speak to the media after the loss that knocked Kansas City out of the playoffs for the first time since 2014.

It was certainly a tough day for the Chiefs, but Russo thought Kelce shouldn’t have ghosted the media.
“I don’t care about his stupid podcast, but what about Kelce on Sunday afternoon?” Russo joked to begin his long rant. “They just lost the game and Mahomes tore his ACL. The last play of the game, [Gardner] Minshew goes to Kelce to try to score a field goal and is intercepted. Kelce, after settling into the locker room, said, “Not today guys, I’m not going to talk to you.” The media.
“Wait a minute, time out! We have these poor guys who have covered the Chiefs for years, who go to every training camp practice, every preseason game. Every day for seven months, they cover the football team and you blow them up at the end of that game when they knocked out Mahomes, maybe the last game you ever play. You’re not going to say three words to them. You can’t tell them, ‘Terrible day for us. I don’t know what I’m going to do.” to do with my career I hope Pat does well, when you walk in the door? You say, “Not today” and you don’t talk to the press.

To end his rant, Russo claimed that no “serious sports fan” listens to “New Heights.”
“Look, I understand you have your brother and you do the podcast. I understand,” Russo said. “Maybe you want to keep the news exclusive. But no serious sports fan listens to this nonsense anyway. It’s a situation here where it’s a Sunday afternoon where we want to hear from you. Mahomes is out for the year, you can’t play anymore. The season is over. You lost and you’re not making the playoffs.”
The Chiefs still have three games left, but it’s a sad time for the franchise that has reached the last three Super Bowls as AFC champions.

NFL Network also reported that Mahomes tore his LCL as well as his ACL, which could complicate recovery.
He underwent successful surgery by Dr. Dan Cooper in Dallas on Monday. The Chiefs hope Mahomes can return for the start of the 2026 season, but his recovery could take more than nine months.
However, according to Russo, Kelce’s future with the franchise is still up in the air. He said earlier this season that he would inform the Chiefs of his decision regarding a possible retirement before the new league year begins in March.

But Kelce still has three games to play with the rest of his teammates, so it’s unlikely he’ll take his place in these final weeks, even if the playoffs are out of reach.
Kelce, playing his 13th NFL season with the Chiefs, has 67 catches for 797 yards and five touchdowns in 14 games this season.
