- Mustafa Suleyman, CEO of Microsoft AI, admitted that Gemini 3 could outperform Copilot in some areas
- Suleyman highlighted Copilot’s long-term ambitions
- He wants people to treat Copilot like an omnipresent personal assistant
Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman has done something almost unheard of in the ongoing game of AI model one-upmanship and admitted that a rival model performs better.
“[Gemini 3] can do things that Copilot can’t do,” Suleyman said Bloomberg in an interview. He was quick to add that “Copilot also has features it doesn’t have,” but it’s a notable acknowledgment from an AI leader that other models may be ahead in at least some respects.
Gemini 3 was touted by Google as its most powerful multimodal model to date. Suleyman seemed willing to give Gemini 3 all due respect, although he quickly pivoted to highlight Copilot as more robust and suitable for everyday use, thanks in part to its digital vision.
“Copilot is really amazing for vision. It can see everything you see and talk to you in real time,” Suleyman said. “You can share your screen with Copilot on mobile or desktop, talk about it, and get feedback,” he cited as evidence of Copilot’s focus on utility rather than flash.
“We’re really trying to imagine the everyday experience of having this really smart assistant by your side, who can help you get unstuck whenever you’re stuck.”
This vision is not hypothetical. Microsoft is aggressively integrating Copilot into its products, from Windows 11 to Outlook to Excel to Microsoft Edge, which now offers an AI-assisted Copilot mode in the browser.
Suleyman described the company’s goal as “humanistic superintelligence,” meaning AI that helps, but doesn’t work alone. Microsoft would “walk away” from any AI that showed signs of unpredictable behavior, he added. “We will not continue to develop a system that risks slipping away from us. »
The future of the co-pilot
Google’s Gemini 3 isn’t trying to compete on interactive assistance. It’s about being the smartest, most capable assistant in the room. It aims to be the best at understanding what people are saying, combining different data and coming up with creative results. And as Suleyman said, that means Gemini 3 can work in a certain way that Copilot can’t.
Suleyman and Microsoft want Copilot to be more grounded. But this kind of clarity could be a gift for consumers. After years of abstract announcements about AI, it’s becoming easier to see how different models excel in different areas. Suleyman could imagine a world in which Copilot and Gemini succeed in different ways, meeting different user needs.
