Police beef up security outside Basant

Checkpoints would be set up in advance to ensure motorcyclists install protective cables on their vehicles.

LAHORE:

As preparations for Basant gather pace in the provincial capital, the Lahore Police has finalized a comprehensive security plan and declared 40 sensitive places in the city as red zones to avoid loss of lives caused by kite flying.

Authorities say the red zones were identified in light of previous fatal incidents involving sharp kite strings.

Joint police and traffic police teams will be deployed in these areas to strictly enforce security measures and maintain public order.

Officials said checkpoints would be set up in advance to ensure motorcyclists install protective cables on their vehicles to avoid injuries from metal or glass-covered kite strings.

Enhanced surveillance will be carried out in red zones with the support of the Safe City Authority’s surveillance cameras. Sources said that transportation of kites and kite strings will be allowed only after formal approval from the government.

Currently, the making and transportation of kites remains prohibited throughout the city.

“Permission to make kites will be granted only after issuance of an official notification from the government,” a police official said, adding that a zero-tolerance policy would be adopted against violations. Authorities said the security plan aims to ensure public safety and prevent accidents and public order problems.
