ISLAMABAD:

Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Yahya Afridi has emphasized that justice must be accessible in practice, not just in principle, saying the new year calls us to reflect, reform and renew our commitment to a justice system that puts the citizen at the centre.

“[Justice must be] worthy in the process, not just in the result; and attentive to the needs of women, children, marginalized people and those living in remote and underserved areas,” the CJP said in a message to the nation released on New Year’s Eve.

While extending warm greetings and best wishes to the people of Pakistan, members of the judiciary, the legal community and all those who look to the courts for justice and solace, he prayed that 2026 may bring renewed confidence in the rule of law and the judiciary.

According to the CJP, the Constitution entrusts the judiciary with the solemn responsibility to safeguard rights, uphold the rule of law and ensure that justice is not only done, but is seen to be done fairly, impartially and without delay.

“This responsibility takes on deeper meaning when viewed through the lived experience of ordinary citizens who approach our courts with hope, vulnerability and trust.”

He said that in 2026, the justice system will pursue significant reforms aimed at improving accessibility, reducing delays, increasing transparency and leveraging technology responsibly in the service of justice.

“These efforts will be guided by a clear focus on the outcomes that matter most to the public: timely decisions, understandable processes, and accessible and humane courts.

“I remain confident that, through collective determination, professionalism and integrity, the judiciary will continue to build public trust and uphold the ideals enshrined in our Constitution.

“In this new year, I reaffirm the judiciary’s unwavering commitment to serving every citizen with fairness, independence and compassion,” he added.
