Women’s tennis legend Martina Navratilova has gained attention for her ongoing comments on the recent US military operation to capture Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and its aftermath.

After expressing support for criminal sanctions against U.S. oil companies trying to source oil from Venezuela and suggesting that the recent U.S. intervention was “looting” in a series of messages Saturday, Navratilova took direct aim at President Donald Trump.

“He’s absolutely crazy. Not to mention it’s completely illegal,” Navratilova wrote on

Navratilova then responded to the clip again, writing, “He wants to be king of the WORLD!”

In another article, Navratilova doubled down on her claims that Trump is committing criminal acts with Venezuela’s intervention.

“President of peace, my a–! Trump breaks more laws than all previous presidents combined. A serial criminal on so many different fronts!” Navratilova wrote in response to a New York Times op-ed.

The tennis legend’s comments sparked mixed reactions on social media, with many criticizing him.

“Please go back to playing and talking about games. You have no credibility as a political expert. Sit down,” one X user wrote.

One user wrote: “You need to stick to tennis because you have no idea about politics.”

Another user joked that Navratilova suffered from Trump Derangement Syndrome (TDS).

“TDS is strong with you. Keep talking about hitting a furball with a net,” the user wrote.

One user refuted Navratilova’s claim that Trump’s strikes were illegal and pointed to the fact that the tennis star left the former Czechslavakia to escape a totalitarian communist government.

“No, it’s not lol,” the user wrote, referring to Navratilova’s “illegal” statement. “It’s a shame that you hate Trump more than your peers. Again, why did you leave your country?”

Navratilova said she left her native country in 1975, citing her experience under Soviet rule, unhappy with limitations on individual freedoms.

KAMALA HARRIS DECLAIMS TRUMP ADMINISTRATION’S CAPTURE OF VENEZUELA’S MADURO AS “ILLEGAL AND REPrudent”

Many Venezuelans celebrated the U.S. capture of Maduro, who had also limited his personal freedoms during his rule, as humanitarian concerns grew among the country’s population. He is also seen by the United States and much of the world as an illegitimate leader due to suspicions about how the 2024 election was conducted.

However, Navratilova has instead compared Trump to her home country’s authoritarian regime in the past, as seen in the tennis legend’s pinned post on X.

“I grew up in a totalitarian authoritarian country and I will not vote for this, now or ever,” she wrote in October 2024, referring to Trump.

Nonetheless, Navratilova supported Trump’s position on at least one important issue, namely protecting women’s sports and spaces from biological males, earning her praise and support from conservatives. Navratilova is considered an ally of conservative influencer Riley Gaines, XX-XY Athletics founder Jennifer Sey, and has come to the defense of “Harry Potter” author JK Rowling on the issue of male biological transgender people invading women’s spaces.

Navratilova also joined a coalition of athletes, alongside Gaines, in signing a letter condemning the Iranian regime for the death sentence of boxing champion Mohammad Javad Vafaei Sani in November.

Yet Navratilova has regularly expressed strong opposition to Trump and Republicans in recent years on seemingly every other issue, including Venezuela.

She later wrote: “Holding a country hostage while plundering its natural resources. Next stop: either Greenland or Nigeria,” in response to a thread that included a report on Wall Street executives from the financial, energy and defense sectors visiting Venezuela after the recent strikes.

Maduro, who was elected in 2013 after serving as Hugo Chavez’s vice president, faces charges of narcoterrorism conspiracy, conspiracy to import cocaine, possession of machine guns and destructive devices, and conspiracy to possess machine guns and destructive devices against the United States.

While several congressional Democrats came out in force to condemn the operation to capture Maduro and his wife, other Democrats broke away from the pack to applaud the action, including Sen. John Fetterman, Democrat of Pennsylvania, and Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, Democrat of Florida.

Meanwhile, Venezuelans in Miami, Chile, Peru, Ecuador and Madrid donned Venezuela’s national colors and waved flags hours after Trump announced that Maduro and his wife had been expelled from the country following the nighttime U.S. military operation.

In Miami, Venezuelans danced and clapped, and celebrations also took place outside Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence in Palm Beach, Florida. In Doral, Florida, revelers chanted “Freedom!” and draped Venezuelan flags over their shoulders.
