Arizona Cardinals coach Jonathan Gannon was the latest NFL coach to be fired on “Black Monday” after the team suffered its ninth straight loss of the season.
The move was announced via the team’s website after the Cardinals finished the season with a 37-20 loss to the Los Angeles Rams.

“Jonathan is a very smart, driven, enthusiastic, smart, great coach,” Cardinals owner Michael Bidwill said in a news conference Monday.

“He made us better, but I think, as you all know, it’s a championship of wins and losses. The wins and losses speak for themselves, especially this year. We just felt like we were going in the wrong direction and we needed to change course.”
Gannon, 43, was short of media attention after the game and didn’t have much to say after the Cardinals finished 3-14.

“Not great,” he said when asked to sum up the season. “A lot of adversity, but there will be growth.”
“My best memory? My best memory didn’t happen,” he continued. “That’s going to be the growth that comes from this year. That’s a good question.”

Gannon declined to speculate on his future, telling reporters that Monday would look like the “same 24 hours” as any Monday after failing to qualify for the playoffs. But that wasn’t the case.
His firing comes after three seasons with the organization, but the 2024 NFL season was by far Gannon’s worst.
The Cardinals broke out with two straight wins, but injuries to stars like Kyler Murray and James Conner, combined with sloppy, self-inflicted mistakes — including Emari Demercado’s premature celebration and fumbled ball at the goal line — quickly ended any realistic playoff hopes.

Gannon even made his own mistake when he was fined $100,000 by the NFL for appearing to have an altercation with Demercado after the fumble.
Gannon leaves the organization with a 15-36 record.
