One of the largest fiber broadband companies in the United States, Brightspeed, is reportedly investigating a potential data breach and theft affecting more than a million customers.
Last weekend, a group of hackers calling themselves Crimson Collective published a new message on their Telegram channel, informing their subscribers of the attack:
“If anyone has someone who works at BrightSpeed, tell them to read their emails quickly! We have over a million residential user PII in our hands,” the group reportedly said. He also added that he would release samples Monday evening, “giving them time to respond to us first.”
Claims under investigation
According to Crimson Collective, the personally identifiable information (PII) they stole includes people’s names, email addresses, phone numbers, street addresses, user account information linked to session/user IDs, payment history, partial payment card information, and appointment/order records.
Brightspeed has yet to confirm or deny these claims. The company’s website and social media channels make no mention of a breach, and the company told media outlets that it is currently investigating the matter:
“We take the security of our networks and the protection of our customers’ and employees’ information seriously and are rigorous in securing our networks and monitoring threats. We are currently investigating reports of a cybersecurity event,” Brightspeed said. BeepComputer. “As we learn more, we will keep our customers, employees and authorities informed.”

It was established in 2022 after Apollo Global Management acquired the local exchange assets of Lumen Technologies. The company builds and operates fiber optic broadband as well as traditional Internet and voice services in 20 states in the Midwest, Southeast and Mid-Atlantic regions.
Brightspeed has rapidly expanded its fiber optic network, reaching more than two million homes and businesses, with a goal of reaching more than five million locations and serving an under-penetrated footprint of 7.3 million premises. The company’s revenue is estimated at around $1 billion per year, supported by multibillion-dollar capital investments and grants.
