Strong seismic tremors were felt in and around Islamabad, triggering panic among residents. According to the seismic center, the earthquake measured a magnitude of 6.1 on the Richter scale and struck at a depth of 159 kilometers.
The tremors were clearly felt in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Swat, Malakand, Muzaffarabad, Gilgit, Skardu and Abbottabad, as well as other parts of the country. Earthquakes were also reported in Azad Kashmir and Indian-administered Kashmir.

Some agencies put the magnitude at 5.8, with the epicenter located in the border region between Tajikistan and China. In Xinjiang, the border area between Tajikistan and China, the earthquake was reported with a magnitude of 6.1.
An earthquake originating 87 kilometers northwest of Karachi was recorded on December 16. The quake registered a magnitude of 5.2 at a depth of 12 kilometers, with its epicenter located at 25.52°N, 66.55°E. City residents reported feeling tremors in several areas.
