- A thinner, brighter screen would be planned for the iPhone Air 2
- We might also see a bigger battery on the device
- The phone is expected to appear sometime in 2027
The iPhone Air is certainly a nice smartphone, but rumor has it that it isn’t selling very well for Apple. Now, a new batch of leaks points to upgrades we could see on the iPhone Air 2 model, expected sometime in 2027.
These leaks come from The Elec (via 9to5Google) and start with a prediction that the iPhone Air 2 will use CoE (Color filter on Encapsulation) technology in its display. This is the same technology planned for the foldable iPhone and, above all, it would mean an improvement in brightness.
That’s not all: the brighter screen could also be thinner, meaning more room for a bigger battery for the iPhone Air 2. In our review of the iPhone Air, we described the battery life as “solid,” so improvements in this area would certainly be welcome.
If Apple manages to make the screen panel thinner, it could also make the phone overall thinner, rather than making the battery bigger – but given that the iPhone Air already measures just 5.6mm front to back (beating the Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge), an increase in battery size and capacity might be a better idea.
Another camera too
The other major problem people seem to have with the iPhone Air is that there is only one rear camera. We’ve already seen rumors that Apple is going to fix this with the next model by adding a second camera with an ultra-wide lens.
Better battery life and improved cameras would go a long way toward remedying the iPhone Air’s most notable flaws, although, for the sake of balance, we should point out that the device certainly has its fans, too.
Samsung has been reported to have abandoned plans to launch a Samsung Galaxy S26 Edge after poor sales of the current Edge model, suggesting that consumer demand for ultra-thin phones is rather low.
Nonetheless, Apple appears to have committed to at least one additional iPhone Air model. We may have to wait until 2027 to see it, though: Apple is said to be planning a shake-up of the launch schedule this year, with the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max appearing in 2026, and the iPhone 18 and iPhone Air 2 waiting until 2027.
