Pakistani authorities have intercepted a large cache of ammunition and magazines coming from Afghanistan, sources at the Torkham border have confirmed. According to authorities, the weapons were seized from a truck, and the vehicle and its driver were taken into custody for further investigation.
The operation was carried out by Pakistan Customs at Torkham, under the supervision of Collector of Customs Apprizment and Additional Collector Amir Hamza Cheema, acting on a tip-off. Authorities said the interception not only prevented a major arms smuggling attempt but also foiled a possible large-scale terrorist operation in Pakistan.
Security sources noted that following the withdrawal of US and NATO forces from Afghanistan, billions of dollars of military equipment was left behind, some of which is believed to be used by the banned militant group Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) against Pakistani security forces.
United Nations and United States officials have identified the TTP as a significant threat to regional security, posing dangers to Pakistan and neighboring countries.
