Legendary professional golfer Greg Norman on Wednesday praised President Donald Trump for U.S. action in Venezuela last week that led to the capture of Nicolas Maduro and his wife.

Norman, a two-time British Open champion and former CEO of LIV Golf, spoke with “Fox & Friends” host Steve Doocy in Florida and offered glowing remarks about how the United States has handled the situation in the South American country.

“He’s true to his word,” Norman said. “And I said in his first term, I’ve known quite a few presidents, but this is the first president that I’ve spent time with who has real stars and stripes running in his blood.

“So what he did in Venezuela, I applaud him. That timing, his execution just showed the sheer force, the power and the will of the United States to protect their hemisphere and they should protect their backyard.”

Trump announced on January 3 that US special forces had carried out a “large-scale strike” against Caracas and captured Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores. Both were taken to New York and appeared in Manhattan federal court on January 5 on drug charges, where they each pleaded not guilty.

The raid comes after months of pressure on Venezuela and more than two dozen strikes in Latin American waters against suspected drug traffickers as part of Trump’s efforts to crack down on the flow of drugs into the United States.

The Trump administration has regularly said it does not recognize Maduro as a legitimate head of state and that he is the leader of a drug cartel. Similarly, Trump said in December 2025 that he thought it would be “smart” for Maduro to resign.

The Trump administration justified Maduro’s seizure as a “law enforcement” operation, and Secretary of State Marco Rubio said congressional approval was not needed since the operation did not amount to an “invasion.”
