- iOS and Android devices will listen to ultrasound to know if they are in a meeting room
- Companion mode appears as the preferred connection option
- It’s also easier to share audio during calls
Google Meet has been updated to automatically detect meeting rooms, making Companion mode the priority connection method to reduce echoes and audio feedback associated with multiple active mics nearby.
With this meeting room detection, Google Meet will also automatically record users participating in the call in question so that administrators can track participation.
The feature works on Android and iOS devices, perfect for secondary devices, and supports Meet and Gmail apps.
Google Meet makes it easy to join via Companion Mode
The system works when the main device or conferencing equipment in a meeting room emits ultrasonic sound that is quiet to the human ear. Compatible devices can hear this and know that they offer the Companion Mode option by default and are recording you.
“To automatically check in, the Green Room uses the microphone on your phone or tablet to detect an ultrasound signal from the conference room equipment, streamlining the process and eliminating unnecessary steps.”
Administrators can enable or disable this proximity detection at the room level, but Google has not clarified whether end users can opt out of using this feature.
Automatic room check-in with Companion mode support has already started rolling out to all Google Workspace users, including individual account holders, but some areas may be slower than others to get it.
And separately, for those times when you need to share audio, Google has made it easier to share audio directly from third-party media apps when using Chrome on desktop to further reduce the chances of auditory echo. Now available to all users, Google admitted that this long-absent feature was “highly requested” by its users.
