Rehearing in DHA water supply case

KARACHI:

The Constitutional Bench of the Sindh High Court on Monday decided to rehear a petition challenging non-supply of drinking water in DHA areas and sought further arguments from the parties.

Petitioner Sameera Mohammadi contended that a regular bench of the SHC had already completed its deliberations on the matter and the constitutional bench should now deliver its verdict.

However, lawyers for the cantonment authorities argued that following the 27th constitutional amendment, the matter had been transferred to the Constitutional Court and needed to be heard again.

Justice Yousuf Ali Sayeed observed that the petitioner had two options: either allow the Constitutional Court to hear the case or withdraw it and approach the Federal Constitutional Court.

The petitioner requested that the matter be referred to the ordinary judiciary. The court ordered that such an application can be filed with the office. On February 14, the court adjourned the hearing and sought further submissions from all the petitioners, while extending the interim order regarding uninterrupted supply of drinking water to DHA areas.

Advocating against banning an athlete

The Constitutional Bench has issued notices to the Pakistan Sports Board (PSB), Pakistan Padel Federation (PPF) and others regarding a petition challenging the life ban imposed on former athlete Qurratul Ain.

The petitioner’s lawyer argued that Qurratul Ain had represented Pakistan at the international level and served as the general secretary of the PPF. A deputy director of netball, a PSB subsidiary, had imposed a lifetime ban without legal authority.
