- The OLED MacBook Pro could arrive well before the end of 2026
- Mass production has apparently already started on screens
- The upgraded displays are also rumored to be compatible with touchscreens.
Rumors have long been circulating that Apple was going to give its MacBook Pro line of laptops an OLED display upgrade in the not too distant future, and now it appears that the upgraded models could appear sooner than expected.
According to popular tipster Yeux1122 (via 9to5Mac), Samsung has now started mass production of its latest 8.6th generation OLED panels – and Apple’s OLED MacBook Pros are expected to be the first beneficiaries.
These panels aren’t expected to go into mass production until the second quarter of 2026 (April, May, or June), so it follows that the laptops themselves could make an earlier than expected appearance later this year.
Previous predictions pointed to a launch window toward the end of 2026, but if the timeline can be moved forward, there may be room for an unveiling around September or October. However, this remains quite speculative at the moment.
Also compatible with touch screen
In addition to featuring OLED technology – which in theory offers a superior visual experience to the LCD screens currently used in MacBooks, with deeper blacks and excellent contrast – these panels are also compatible with touchscreens.
Your mileage may vary on whether or not you’re interested in a touchscreen MacBook. What we can definitely say is that this will blur the lines between MacBooks and iPads even more, if both are capable of using touch input (and perhaps the Apple Pencil).
However, if previous rumors are correct, only high-end MacBook Pros will benefit from the OLED upgrade: those using the M6 Pro and M6 Max chipsets, which have not yet been announced. The cheaper options will apparently stay true to current display technology.
Before the M6 revolution begins, we think there will still be room for the MacBook Pro M5 Pro and M5 Max to be revealed – perhaps even this month or next month – following the refreshed Apple M5 laptops launched last year.
