There is a sense of inevitability around the Bills and Josh Allen in particular in the playoffs, but the odds will be stacked against them on Saturday. As the AFC’s No. 1 seed, the Broncos come out well-rested (while the Bills are playing a short week), they’re 8-1 at home at high altitude this season, and their defense is among the most fearsome in the NFL.
Denver’s defense racked up 68 sacks during the regular season – the fifth-highest total in NFL history – while limiting opposing QBs to a 57.8% completion rate and an average of 5.4 yards per attempt. Allen, of course, is no ordinary QB, but this is a limited Buffalo group that can’t stop the run and doesn’t really have any weapons to take the weight off Allen’s shoulders.
Unfortunately for Sean Payton, the Broncos rushing offense has been sluggish all year. That means that even if the defense manages to tackle Allen, who injured his fingers, knees and feet last weekend, they will almost certainly need Bo Nix to produce the goods.
On his day, the second-year QB can be a winner, but Sean McDermott handled him with brutal efficiency the last time these teams faced each other. Nix passed for 64 yards and a score in the first quarter of their Wildcard Round meeting a year ago, but was shut out for the rest of the game.
