Hosts Morocco will face surprise 2025/26 Africa Cup of Nations finalists Senegal at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium on Sunday, with both teams looking to clinch their second AFCON title. Since reaching the final four of the 2022 World Cup and securing co-hosting rights for 2030, the Atlas Lions have been dreaming of this moment. The legend has already been invented, the fireworks choreographed, the golden generation has taken the oath, but this could still be the story of Senegal.
Five years ago, Mané scored the winning penalty that secured Senegal’s first CAN title. On Wednesday, he ensured their passage to the final. While Sunday’s clash should be his last appearance at the CAN, it would be quite a reminder. Pape Thiaw’s main concern is that two of his key men, captain Kalidou Koulibaly and combative midfielder Habib Diarra, are suspended.
Walid Regragui’s pragmatic approach did not win him the affection of Moroccan supporters, but it was justified. They have conceded just one goal in six matches and managed to knock out Nigeria in midweek, thanks to Yassine Bounou’s heroics in the penalty shootout. They will therefore not be intimidated by Senegal’s all-star attack made up of Mané, Nicolas Jackson, Iliman Ndiaye and Ismaila Sarr.
What could keep Regragui up at night, however, is Brahim Diaz’s form. The Real Madrid man leads the way with five goals, but if Mané manages to pin African Player of the Year Achraf Hakimi, he will cut off Diaz’s main supply line. Ayoub El Kaabi and Ismael Saibari are the only other Moroccan players to have found the net.
