The US national anthem being played before an NBA game between the Orlando Magic and Memphis Grizzlies in London was interrupted Sunday by someone imploring the United States to “leave Greenland alone.”
Vanessa Williams sang “The Star-Spangled Banner” before the match at the O2 Arena. As she neared the end of this song, the heckler let out his outburst. This plea elicited some applause from the crowd.

President Donald Trump has insisted that the United States controls Greenland over Denmark since he took office for the second time last year.
A semi-autonomous territory of Denmark, Greenland is home to a crucial US military base and has gained increasing strategic importance as melting ice opens new shipping routes and provides access to a wealth of natural resources.
On Friday, Trump went even further. He said he would consider imposing new tariffs on countries that defy his plan for the United States to acquire Greenland.

“I could impose tariffs on countries if they do not accept Greenland, because we need Greenland for our national security,” he said.
His recent remarks have sparked concern in Denmark and other NATO allies, prompting troops from several European countries – including France, Germany, Sweden and Norway – to deploy to Greenland for security measures.

“The Star-Spangled Banner” has been criticized when it is performed before sporting events abroad. The issue occurred ahead of two premium WWE live events in 2025. Canadian fans also booed the US national anthem during the 4 Nations showdown and before an MLS match.
