Jailed PTI leaders seek early CJP, LHC CJ hearings in May 9 cases

Jailed Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf leaders on Monday again approached Pakistan’s Chief Justice Yahya Afridi for an early resolution to their appeals against the convictions in the May 9 cases.

The letter was sent to the CJP as well as the Chief Justice of the Lahore High Court by jailed PTI leaders Dr Yasmin Rashid, Mian Mehmoodur Rasheed, Ijaz Chaudhry and Omer Sarfraz Cheema through their legal team.

Intizaar Panjutha, head of the PTI Insaf Lawyers Forum, confirmed that the letter had been sent to the two chief justices.

He said the first letter was written by Dr Yasmin Rashid to the Chief Justice of Pakistan on December 14, 2024.

A second letter was sent on May 2, 2025, entitled “Justice delayed is justice denied”in which she stated that cases were not being handled effectively due to political interference. She also pointed out that her election petition had been pending for a long time.

A third letter was submitted on September 9, 2025, by Dr. Yasmin Rashid, along with three other leaders, through their lawyer Rana Mudassar Umar, to the Chief Justice of Pakistan and the Chief Justice of the Lahore High Court, expressing concerns over what they described as “a serious miscarriage and bad faith political victimization due to abuse of anti-terrorism procedures.”

According to Panjutha, the latest letter has now been submitted by Dr Yasmin Rashid, Senator Ijaz Ahmed Chaudhry, Omer Sarfraz Cheema and Mian Mehmoodur Rasheed to the Chief Justice of the Lahore High Court, seeking an early resolution to their appeals, especially those related to party members.

Many PTI leaders have been indicted on various charges after the violent protests that erupted on May 9, 2023 following the arrest of former Prime Minister Imran Khan at the Islamabad High Court (IHC) premises in a corruption case.
