- CIRO breach exposed sensitive data of 750,000 Canadian investors
- Hackers stole personal information but not passwords or PINs
- CIRO offers two years of free credit monitoring and identity protection
The 2025 cyberattack on the Canadian Investment Regulatory Organization (OCRI) affected approximately 750,000 Canadians, it has been confirmed.
Founded in 2023, CIRO is Canada’s national self-regulatory organization that oversees securities dealers, trading activities and market integrity.
In mid-August 2025, CIRO revealed a cyberattack and data breach, saying it had been forced to shut down parts of its infrastructure and launch a “thorough forensic investigation” to better understand what had happened.
CIRO protects its customers
The investigation has been completed and found that approximately 750,000 Canadian investors had sensitive data exposed by the hackers, including their dates of birth, phone numbers, annual income, social insurance numbers, government-issued identification numbers, investment account numbers and account statements.
Login information such as passwords, security questions and PINs were not stolen, CIRO said, but that makes this breach very dangerous. With all this information, cybercriminals can launch convincing phishing attacks, tricking victims into sharing their login credentials and gaining access to the investment platform of their choice.
CIRO said its investigation into this matter was robust, as its investigators spent more than 9,000 hours investigating the case.
The conclusion is that the data was not leaked to the dark web and was not misused. Still, it provided everyone involved with two years of free credit monitoring and identity theft protection services, which will definitely come in handy if these phishing emails start arriving.
Those affected by the breach will receive a direct email from CIRO, with instructions on how to sign up for the Identity Protection service. Those who do not receive notification can contact CIRO directly.
