If you want a glimpse of the scale of the RAM pricing crisis, a new deal from a major retailer highlights it quite effectively.
On Amazon in the US, you can see that there is a flash deal (a price reduction for a limited time) on a Corsair Vengeance DDR5 RAM kit consisting of two 16GB memory modules (running at 6000MHz).
This 32GB dollop of memory – which will get you through any everyday or gaming PC, it’s worth noting – is now $345 in said deal, which is a substantial $55 reduction (14% off) off the listed list price of $400.
While this may seem like a half-decent deal at first glance, the truth behind this asking price is that as of September 2025, this RAM cost less than half of its current cost – when discounted. In fact, the current deal on a solid DDR5 RAM kit is 2.5 times the price of just four months ago.
Is this a good deal? Well, obviously from that perspective it’s not a great deal, but compared to the rest of the RAM landscape it’s unfortunately as good as it gets.
Even a 32GB DDR4 (latest generation) RAM kit will currently cost you $240 (at least) on Amazon (sticking to well-known brands, as I recommend, rather than flimsy memory products). As we’ve seen recently, this older memory standard, which is also becoming much more expensive, is a more recent unfortunate trend.
Analysis: a warning for potential buyers
How did we get here? The price of system memory has skyrocketed primarily due to a combination of two factors. First, the growing popularity of AI in all its forms has led to a huge demand for RAM to power this technology (in data centers where AI workloads are managed). This is not just system RAM, but also video RAM (graphics cards are heavily involved in this processing as well).
What has made the situation worse is that memory makers have cut back on chip production in the past, due to oversupply, meaning this surge in demand has been much more difficult to manage. RAM, but also storage, especially with high-end SSDs (these drives all also use memory chips), have therefore seen huge price increases as an unprecedented level of demand has been met with reduced levels of supply.
The other problem here is that correcting these chip inventory levels is not an easy process, as memory makers cannot create additional production (huge factories, or fabs as they are called) overnight. Bringing additional manufacturing capacity online is a long-term task, and the idea is that even if new factories are created, they will not be in action and have a significant impact on the supply situation until 2028.
Unfortunately, this means that this year, and probably 2027 as well, will be a very difficult time for RAM supply, and consumers will almost certainly receive the shorter end of the memory stick (PC makers and other bulk buyers, obviously including these data centers, are the priority). Many predictions indicate that RAM price rises will get worse before they get better or stabilize.
So, do I suggest you buy this Amazon deal, then? I can’t make that call for you, and in all honesty, it still hurts to be forced to spend so much money on 32GB of RAM for your PC. On the other hand, as noted, this deal is as good as it gets (from what I can see at the time of writing for a decent DDR5 kit), and a year from now, $345 might look like a bargain in the US (and the same might be true for equivalent deals in your region right now).
However, that said, if you don’t have a desperate need for RAM in the near future and aren’t planning to build a PC for a while, I’d be tempted to wait until prices start to normalize – which could perhaps happen sooner than experts think. As long as your computer will do this for a while, being patient is probably the best approach, and I won’t rush out to buy memory myself.
Storage, on the other hand, is probably another matter. You can still get relatively acceptable prices on low-end SSDs, and if you think you might need one in the near future, I’d definitely seriously consider buying now.
