ISLAMABAD:
The government on Saturday increased high-speed diesel (HSD) prices by Rs 11.30 per liter while keeping the price of petrol unchanged in line with fluctuations in global oil prices, effective February 1 (today).
According to a notification, the government has maintained petrol prices. The government revised the prices following recommendations from the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA), the statement said.
According to the revised prices, the high-speed diesel will be sold at Rs 268.38 per liter as against the previous rate of Rs 257.08 per liter effective January 16, 2026.
On the other hand, the price of automobile petrol, commonly known as petrol, has been maintained at the current price of Rs253.17 per litre. Petrol was priced at Rs253.17 per liter during the previous fortnight and will remain at the same level.
High-speed diesel is widely used in transportation, agriculture and industry, while automotive gasoline is mainly consumed by private vehicles and motorcycles. Therefore, the increase in the price of high speed diesel will impact the life of the common man.
However, users of gasoline for motorcycles and cars will continue to benefit from the current rate.
On January 15, the federal government kept the prices of petroleum products unchanged.
The unchanged prices were due to the increase in oil tax on petrol by Rs 4.62 per liter and Re 0.80 on high-speed diesel. Together, oil and carbon taxes now total Rs 87 on petrol and Rs 79 on diesel.
According to reports, the federal government collected Rs828 billion in oil taxes out of the budgeted Rs1.4 trillion in the first six months (July-December) of the current fiscal year. The estimate of Rs1.47 trillion PL is up from the Rs1.16 trillion budgeted in the previous fiscal year.
The OGRA also announced an increase in liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) prices by Rs 6.37 per kg in a notification issued on Saturday.
The authority said LPG prices have been increased by Rs 6.37 per kilogram, affecting both domestic 11.8 kg cylinders and commercial consumers who rely heavily on the fuel for cooking and heating as various parts of the country face gas shortages.
Following the revision, the price of an 11.8 kg domestic LPG cylinder increased by Rs 75.21, setting the new retail rate at Rs 2,667.40 for February, compared to Rs 2,592.19 in the previous month.
The OGRA notification said the updated per kilogram price now stands at Rs266.05, while warning distributors and retailers not to charge rates higher than the officially notified prices.
The regulator said strict action would be taken against those violating price regulations after receiving complaints about excessive prices in several markets.
The producer price of LPG is linked to Saudi Aramco-CP and the US dollar exchange rate. Compared to the previous month, the Saudi Aramco-CP increased by 3.30 percent, while the average dollar exchange rate decreased by 0.14 percent.
