A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms episode 3 has debuted on HBO Max and other streaming services – and it finally solves one of the show’s biggest mysteries.
Entitled “The Squire”, the Game of Thrones The final chapter of the prequel lifts the veil on Egg’s true identity. And, for viewers who haven’t read The hedge knightaka the first part of the “Dunk and Egg” book trilogy, this will surprise them as much as Dunk.
Full spoilers immediately follow For A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms‘ (AKotSK) third entry. Go back now if you haven’t watched it yet.
What is Egg’s real name in Knight of the Seven Kingdoms?
From AKotSK premiered on HBO Max and other streaming platforms in mid-January, non-book readers have speculated that Egg is hiding a big secret. That being said, he is not only a member of House Targaryen, but also the youngest son of Prince Maekar Targaryen, who disappeared a few days ago.
Viewers who made these predictions will feel vindicated by what is revealed in “The Squire.”
First, around 10:00 p.m., Egg is surprised by a fortune teller when she tells Dunk and Egg what the future holds for them individually. What is Egg afraid of? In addition to saying “you will be king”, she tells Egg that he “will die in a burning fire, the worms will feed on your ashes, and all who know you will rejoice in your death.”
Such comments will immediately prick the ears of Thrones fans, as the noble Westerosi family most often associated with fire is House Targaryen. Still, anyone can be burned alive, so this doesn’t necessarily confirm that Egg is a Targaryen.
What happens in the final scene of episode 3 does, however. As Dunk enjoys a drink or five with his new pal Raymun, they are interrupted by a panicked Egg. He tells Dunk that Aerion Targaryen attacked Tanselle, a performer in a traveling stage troupe with whom Dunk became infatuated.
When he sees that Aerion has trashed the group’s tent and injured Tanselle – Aerion considers the group’s dragon-based game blasphemous due to its depiction of the beasts that House Targaryen considers sacred – an enraged Dunk attacks Prince Targaryen before being apprehended by Aerion’s guards.
Aerion orders his entourage to begin punishing Dunk by knocking out all of his teeth, but, arriving on the scene, Egg intervenes and pleads for Dunk’s life.
Aerion immediately recognizes the little individual, and after a brief conversation, Egg essentially confirms that he is a Targaryen to Dunk and the assembled crowd – and, by proxy, to us. And, although his real name isn’t spoken out loud until the end credits of Episode 3, Egg is the individual known as Aegon V Targaryen.
Who is Aegon V Targaryen? And have we heard this name before in Game of Thrones?
I’m not going to talk at length about Aegon V Targaryen because, well, spoilers for the rest of this season and Season 2 of A Knight of the Seven Kingdomswhich was announced alongside many other TV show renewals by HBO Max last November.
What I will say though is that he is a future king of Westerosi and has a very important role to play in the future of the continent and the Thrones the universe at large. You can read more about him online if you really want more details on what’s in store for him.
This also isn’t the first time Egg has been mentioned in one of the HBO adaptations of George RR Martin’s beloved fantasy universe. In episode 7 of Game of Thrones season 5, a delusional Maester Aemon calls someone called Egg to his deathbed. As we learned that Aemon is a Targaryen in episode 9 of Thrones‘ first season, it’s clear he’s related to Egg. Only those who have read the Thrones the books, however, were able to make this connection before AKotSK Episode 3 release on one of the best streaming services in the world.
That’s not the only thing that ties Egg to Thrones“radical story. Indeed, Aegon V Targaryen is also the grandfather of Aerys II Targaryen, aka The Mad King.
For the uninitiated: Aerys was the 16th and last Targaryen to sit on the Iron Throne. He is also responsible for concocting the plot that would have destroyed King’s Landing – and killed countless innocents in the process – in the final event of the great civil war known as Robert’s Rebellion.
However, Aerys’ plan was thwarted when Jaime Lannister, one of Aerys’s royal guards, assassinated him to prevent all these deaths. So when Egg’s fortune is told in “The Squire”, it is likely that, despite the soothsayer’s “thou shalt be king” line, she is actually talking about Aerys with all the fire and worm business.
What will happen to Dunk after episode 3 of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms?
That would be revealing, dear reader! I won’t spoil what happens next, but you can watch AKotSK the episode 4 preview above if you want a preview of where things will go from here.
There’s also this spoiler-filled trailer “in the coming weeks” for AKotSK season 1 as well, which will give you an idea of what to expect in the last three episodes of this season. However, I advise you not to watch the teaser above or read the aforementioned article if you are actively avoiding spoilers.
