MP highlights difficulties faced during Hub Chowki pickets

ISLAMABAD:

Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry informed the Senate on Friday that the joint security checkpoints were completely legal, equipped with body cameras, surveillance systems and helplines, and were established solely to ensure public safety in the face of current security challenges.

Responding to a call for attention raised by Asad Qasim regarding the hardships faced by the people of Balochistan and Sindh due to daily prolonged queues at Rangers pickets at Hub Chowki, he said setting up of joint check posts was permitted under Section 6 of the Rangers Ordinance, while Pakistan Customs had also sought assistance from Rangers under the anti-smuggling rules notified by through an SRO in 2023.

He said the Sindh provincial government played a key role in establishing and facilitating these checkpoints in consultation with all stakeholders.

The minister told the House that around 10 joint check posts were operational at different locations, adding that nearly 4,000 vehicles passed through one of these check posts daily, highlighting its importance from the perspective of law and order and combating smuggling.

He added that the checkpoints also aimed to limit the movement of weapons and ammunition, often based on information from intelligence services.

The minister acknowledged that travelers could sometimes face inconvenience, but stressed that these measures were necessary given the security situation.
