When snowboarding debuted at the Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan, in 1998, it consisted of just four events: men’s and women’s half-pipe and giant slalom. Since then, the sport has grown significantly in popularity, to the point where the snowboard program at Milano Cortina 2026 will include 11 events across five disciplines.
For those hoping to witness huge jumps and complicated tricks, the Big Air, Slopestyle and Halfpipe events are not to be missed. In these competitions, athletes compete in a best-of-three competition, throwing down their best moves to get the highest score from the judges. Athletes to watch include Austrian Anna Gasser, Japanese Hirano Ayumu and Australian Scotty James.
Unlike these technical disciplines, Snowboard Cross and Parallel Giant Slalom are speed events where the aim is above all to cross the finish line as quickly as possible. Athletes can reach speeds of 110 km/h when tackling difficult courses where one wrong move can end their medal dreams. In slalom, Italy will be hoping Maurizio Bormolini takes gold in the men’s event, while in the Snowboard Cross team event, countries including Great Britain, Austria and France will all be battling for victory.
