Former NFL agent Ben Dogra slams NCAA for NIL chaos

As name, image and likeness (NIL) agreements have taken over college sports, player and coach movements have become more frenetic than ever.

Former NFL agent Ben Dogra said the NCAA isn’t doing its job and colleges are incapable of governing themselves, which he says is why there’s talk of Congressional involvement.

“I still think it’s better to have less government. You shouldn’t involve the government unless you need to. I don’t think they should be involved. But who’s going to be involved? The NCAA is clearly not doing its job. And you can’t let these colleges govern themselves,” Dogra told PK Press Club Digital in a recent interview.

Dogra referred to Washington quarterback Demond Williams Jr. reversing his decision to transfer as his $4 million contract turned the program upside down.

“It’s going to be difficult to penalize these players for transferring because it’s a business and they have the prerogative to move from one school to another,” Dogra said. “It’s no different than coaches. Coaches do the same thing. I find it very fascinating that at the University of Washington, the quarterback who signed for $4 million was going to give it up and go somewhere else for ($6 million.)”

Dogra said head coach Jedd Fisch was unhappy with the prospect of losing Williams to the transfer portal, but that Fisch himself was looking for other jobs.

“The head coach wasn’t too happy about it, but it was the same head coach, Jedd Fisch, who wanted the Florida job and the Michigan job. So, isn’t what’s good for the goose not good for the eyes? And so, now you’re bringing the kid back because you’re threatening a lawsuit because he broke the contract. Well, do you want that player in your locker room? Is he going to be happy playing for the University of Washington? So you have to be very careful. You might “kill your own culture, because why can’t the kid transfer and break the contract if the coaches do it,” Dogra said.

Dogra then questioned whether, in a situation like this, contracts were enforced across state lines.

“Will these contracts be enforceable across state lines? Who actually regulates them? So unless we have something uniform across the board, and I think this is where they’re talking about Congress getting involved, we really don’t know much until there’s a test case and we haven’t had a major test case,” he said.

Dogra referenced Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney ripping Ole Miss head coach Pete Golding for trying to poach his players. The former agent said navigating NIL is like the Wild West.

Dogra has represented Adrian Peterson, Patrick Willis, Mario Williams and Richard Sherman during his career.
