As Dutch speed skater Jutta Leerdam broke an Olympic record during her run to the gold medal on Monday, her fiancé Jake Paul couldn’t contain his emotions.

He cried with joy.

Paul stood in the stands, bawling his eyes out as Leerdam not only lived up to expectations by winning gold at the Milan Cortina 2026 Games – she also broke the 1,000 meters speed skating record with a time of 1:12.31.

Leerdam broke the previous record set by teammate Femke Kok, who had marked her time moments before Leerdam’s race.

While the 27-year-old skater was moved to tears after seeing her final time, Paul was in the stands doing the same, surrounded by his family, who also couldn’t help but cry tears of joy.

It was Leerdam’s first ever gold medal at the Olympics and her second medal overall after winning silver in Beijing in 2022.

This one was especially special considering Leerdam’s surprising crash during the Dutch Olympic Trials, which forced her to drop out of the race. There were rumors that her place at Milan Cortina was uncertain, but she eventually made the Dutch team.

It was the right decision.

Before the record-breaking race in Leerdam, Kok ran an impressive time of 1:12.59, which ultimately earned the Netherlands a silver medal. Kok is also expected to be in contention for gold in the 500 meters later in the Games.

Rounding out the podium in the 1,000-meter sprint was Japan’s Miho Takagi, who finished third with a time of 1:13.95.

For the Americans, Erin Jackson took first place with a time of 1:15.00. However, as the skaters advanced, she continued to move down the list.

Brittany Bowe, Jackson’s teammate, just finished fourth and missed out on a medal with a time of 1:14.55.

Paul, the polarizing boxer, is no stranger to showing his emotions. And while it was pure joy, he fired off a seemingly angry tweet talking about another major sporting event in the United States.

Paul called Super Bowl LX halftime performer Bad Bunny a “fake citizen” ahead of the Puerto Rican’s performance at Levi’s Stadium on Sunday night. Paul opposed Bad Bunny due to the Grammy Award-winning artist speaking out against things like U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

“To clarify: I did not call anyone a ‘fake citizen’ because they are from Puerto Rico. I live in Puerto Rico and I love Puerto Rico,” Paul said in his latest tweet, clarifying what he wrote Sunday evening. “I’ve used my platform to support Puerto Rico time and time again and I always will. But if you publicly criticize ICE for doing their job and openly hating America, I’m going to speak out about it. Period. It’s the same reason I called out Hunter Hess.

“If you benefit from a country and the platform it gives you, but you publicly disrespect it at the same time, that’s what I mean by being a false citizen. And I recognize that love is more powerful than hate. Love America.”

Paul and Leerdam announced their engagement in March 2025 with a joint Instagram post.
