- Discord announced a global rollout of its age verification policies in March
- The announcement proved comically unpopular with Discord users.
- Here we will detail how to cancel your Discord Nitro subscription
Discord users have outright rejected an announcement from the company detailing the expansion of its age verification policies. Many are now considering canceling their Discord Nitro subscriptions, and here I will tell you how you can do that too.
As confirmed by an official press release from Discord, the provider of the popular messaging app says it will begin “with a phased global rollout to new and existing users in early March,” adding that: “Users may be required to engage in an age verification process to change certain settings or access sensitive content.” This includes age-restricted channels, servers or orders, and certain message requests.
The policy was initially introduced in the United Kingdom and Australia to comply with those countries’ laws on age verification. Following this, in October last year, a large-scale data breach resulted in the theft of around 70,000 Discord user credentials, with hackers allegedly extracting them from a third-party system the app was using for age verification purposes.
How to cancel your Discord Nitro subscription
Canceling your Discord Nitro subscription is easy, and luckily the app doesn’t require you to jump through any hoops to complete the process. The undo process is more or less the same in Discord’s desktop and mobile apps, as well as the browser version.
Simply click the Settings icon (represented by a gear) in the lower left corner of the screen. On mobile, tap the “You” icon (which displays your Discord profile photo), then tap the Settings gear in the top right.
From there, scroll down to “Billing Settings” and look for the “Subscriptions” option. On mobile, it’s still a little different; Under “Billing Settings” you look for the “Manage Nitro” option.
Once here, you can simply select “Cancel” and follow the instructions to end your Discord Nitro subscription. You will be able to access the service until what would have been your next billing date, after which you will return to the standard Discord experience.
