The meeting follows several high-profile terrorist attacks in the country blamed on Afghan and Indian elements.
On February 6, at least 32 worshipers were killed and dozens injured when a massive bomb ripped through an imambargah in Islamabad’s Tarlai area. The explosion occurred during Friday prayers.
Nearly a week before the Islamabad incident, at least 37 terrorists were killed and 10 security forces personnel were martyred after security forces foiled coordinated attacks in 12 locations in Balochistan. In a counter operation carried out by security forces, a total of 216 terrorists were killed, while 22 security personnel embraced martyrdom.
Pakistan is also playing an active role in easing the current tensions between Iran and the United States. On January 29, FM Dar spoke with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi amid growing tensions in the Middle East following renewed threats by US President Donald Trump to take military action against Iran.
After a few hours of discussion between Dar and Araghchi, Prime Minister Shehbaz also spoke with Iranian President Massoud Pezeshkian. Both urged Iran for sustained dialogue and diplomatic engagement to promote peace, security and development in the region.
The last such meeting between the President and the Prime Minister on the country’s security affairs was held in November, when they reaffirmed their resolve to continue action against terrorists and their enablers until the menace is completely eliminated.
The meeting took place after two major terrorist attacks on the Wana Cadet College in South Waziristan and the courthouse in Islamabad.
