New England Patriots wide receiver Stefon Diggs had no choice but to move on after a tough Super Bowl loss.

Just five days after participating in the 29-13 loss that gave the Seattle Seahawks the Lombardi Trophy, the 32-year-old pleaded not guilty to charges of strangulation or choking and misdemeanor battery.

Diggs’ attorney, Michael Schuster, told reporters outside the courtroom Friday that Diggs was “completely innocent” of the “false allegations.”

“We are confident that once the facts and evidence in this case are examined, he will be completely exonerated,” Schuster said via WEEI Radio.

Originally scheduled to appear in court on Jan. 23, two days before the AFC title game, Diggs’ first hearing was pushed back to Friday due to a “previously scheduled work commitment.”

A police account in a court filing says a woman went to the Dedham Police Department on Dec. 16 to report that two weeks earlier, while working as a private chef for Diggs, he had entered her room and became angry during a discussion about money.

The woman told police that Diggs “punched her in the face.” She tried to push him away, then he “tried to strangle her using the crook of his elbow around her neck.”

“She said he was behind her with his arms wrapped around her,” Officer Kenneth J. Ellis wrote. “She said she felt like she was having trouble breathing and felt like she could have passed out.”

Diggs threw her on a bed and lied to her when she told him she hadn’t been paid, Ellis wrote. The chef asked to be paid for a week in November while Diggs hosted guests and had to go home, Ellis wrote. The woman “left her post” and her home in Dedham but returned on Dec. 9 to reclaim her property. At that point, she told police, Diggs referred her to his assistant, who told her she had to sign a nondisclosure agreement before being paid. She did not sign it, police said.

The woman was reluctant to press charges until late December, Ellis wrote, when “she let me know that she had changed her mind a few days ago” and wanted to pursue criminal charges.

Diggs was pretty quiet during the Super Bowl with just three catches for 37 yards. There have also been rumors that he and Cardi B broke up, with speculation that it actually happened during the match. Cardi B was spotted on the field during Bad Bunny’s halftime show, alongside Jessica Alba.

His Patriots teammate Christian Barmore is facing national allegations and his hearing is scheduled for March 9.
