Crime 101 is now out in theaters – and, while its ending isn’t mind-blowing and doesn’t require much explanation, I imagine you’re still wondering about what happens during its finale.
Below, I’ll answer your biggest questions — with input from writer-director Bart Layton for good measure — about the heist thriller from Amazon MGM Studios and Sony Pictures.
Who dies in Crime 101?
None of the new films’ main trio – namely Chris Hemsworth’s Mike Davis (real name James), Mark Ruffalo’s Detective Lou Lubesnick and Halle Berry’s Sharon Colvin.
The only major victim of Crime 101The finale is Ormon, Barry Keoghan’s angry young upstart. He dies of a gunshot wound during the Mexican standoff between him, Lubesnick, and Davis as part of the $11 million heist Davis is attempting to commit in order to effectively retire from a life of crime.
Although it is difficult to determine who delivered the fatal blow, it appears that Davis was responsible. The anxious jewel thief apparently pulled the trigger and, in doing so, broke his self-imposed strict moral code that no one would ever be hurt during a heist he attempted to pull off.
Even if Crime 101 is a near-authentic adaptation of Don Winslow’s 2011 short story of the same name, there was always the possibility that its ending would deviate from the source material. So, did Layton ever consider killing Mike/James, Detective Lubesnick, and/or Sharon in an attempt to shock the audience?
“I didn’t want any of them to be eliminated at the end,” Layton told me in an exclusive chat ahead of the crime film’s Feb. 13 release. “But I thought it was important that they each had an ending that you didn’t see coming.”
What happens to Davis, Lubesnick and Sharon in Crime 101?
Okay, so what do arrive at Crime 101′the main characters before the end credits?
After Ormon is shot, Lubesnick, who was pursuing Davis before and during the events of the film, makes an unexpected decision. not to stop Hemsworth’s protagonist. Carefully disarming the clearly distressed Davis, Lubesnick took pity on him and chose instead to let Davis escape unscathed.
Finding Sharon at the yoga class she and Lubesnick attend, the latter reveals that he has finally solved the case of the Hollywood Freeway jewel thief (NB: Sharon already knows it was Mike/James).
However, before parting ways for the last time, he gives Sharon an envelope containing five real diamonds, which Lubesnick kept from the botched heist. This is not only a symptom of his feelings of alienation from his job as a police officer, but also a way of secretly getting revenge on his unsupportive colleagues at the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) and thanking Sharon for helping him. Remember, she told Lubesnick all about Davis and his plan. Without her, he would still be stuck at square one.
Subsequently, Sharon, who finally left the insurance company that constantly neglected her and refused to promote her, due to her age and gender, now has something incredibly valuable that she can sell to help fund her own business. But she’s not the only one to receive something before the end of the film.
After saying goodbye to Sharon, Lubesnick returns to his office to find a mysterious package. Following the instructions he finds in the main package, he heads to a nearby garage. There, he found the dark green 1968 Camaro that Davis owned. It turns out that, to thank Lubesnick for not apprehending him, Davis left the car – a model that Lubesnick had previously suggested was his dream car – with the hard-working detective. Cue Lubesnick getting a somewhat happy ending as he spins his new wheels.
But what about Davis? We see him driving along the Hollywood Freeway, stopping in a nearby parking area, then turning around to head back toward the California city.
The reason? One of Crime 101In the final scenes Maya (Monica Barbaro), who dated Davis before breaking up with him because he wouldn’t tell her about his past, also receives a package at her workplace. Opening it, she finds a photo of James sitting on the porch of his childhood home alongside his family. Turning it over, she finds and reads a brief message from Davis, which causes her to leave her office and presumably go looking for him.
“It’s a slightly different ending than the new one,” Layton said of Crime 101the final. “The main thing with characters is that they don’t necessarily get what they want, but they get what they need.
“Really, it’s a movie about how we all live,” Layton continued. “Especially in Los Angeles, with the outside perception of success with cars, clothes, [and] apartment, and then feeling this pressure or status anxiety because of it. But it’s also about what motivates these characters and these things that aren’t actually what’s going to make them happy. »
Is there a mid-credits or post-credits scene in Crime 101?
No. If you sit around watching the credits to appreciate how many people worked on it, then kudos to you.
However, if you’re hoping for an end credits scene — you know, like any Marvel movie that MCU stars Chris Hemsworth and Mark Ruffalo may or may not be in — you’ll be sorely disappointed.
Is a sequel to Crime 101 in development?
Neither Amazon nor Sony have publicly announced that there will be a sequel, but Layton admitted that he hasn’t really thought about what a sequel might look like.
“I hadn’t thought about it before the premiere and everyone was asking me, ‘What’s happening in the next one?'” he replied. “I guess people have fallen in love with the characters so much that they want and need more, but I haven’t really thought about it.
“And, you know, I had fun,” he continued. “I loved the experience and I love these actors. Certainly, as far as the experience of doing another one, I would be very excited about it, but I don’t know if I would be the right person to write it or direct it, so we’ll see.”
Is Crime 101 the first of many Don Winslow film adaptations we’ll get?
This is not to say that Layton’s work on film adaptations of Winslow’s literary works is yet finished. Indeed, Crime 101 is only one of the six short stories that make up Brokenan anthology that similarly explores America’s seedy underbelly. So, is Layton ready to bring one of these stories to life?
“Maybe,” he teased. “I’m talking to Don about adapting more stories from his incredible work.
“For me, it’s not just about whether it’s a great story,” he continued. “It’s also about whether it’s a great story that gives me the opportunity to hopefully smuggle it into something that sparks more conversation and leaves you with something to think about after you come out. [of the theater]which is about how we live and the choices we make.
“So I should ask myself if this story gives me the chance to explore some of these more interesting ideas? I guess you’ll have to see.”
