KARACHI:

The Federation of All Pakistan Universities Academic Staff Associations (FAPUASA), protesting the decision to appoint bureaucrats as vice-chancellors, boycotted the teaching process in Sindh universities, including the University of Karachi .

FAPUASA General Secretary Prof Nag Raj said the teaching process would remain suspended in universities across the province. Appointment of bureaucratic VCs in universities will not be acceptable, only experienced professors can understand academics. If the demands are not met in two days, they will surround the Sindh Assembly and CM House.

He said the next step would be severe. A bureaucrat will not be allowed to hold the post of VC in any university. Recruitment of teachers on contractual basis is regrettable, he added.

FAPUASA says the 18th Amendment transfers powers to the private sector, but the PPP centralizes them.

At the call of FAPUASA, Sindh section, a complete boycott of education was organized in the universities of Sindh. Teaching remained suspended in all public universities. The teachers boycotted academic activities to send a clear message to the government that ignoring the serious problems facing universities in Sindh is unacceptable.

FAPUASA Sindh chapter president Ikhtiar Ali Ghumro said he was grateful to all the university professors who made the protest a success. This sacrifice will prove to be an important step in saving the higher education system and highlighting its crises.
