KARACHI:
To strengthen earthquake monitoring in the northern belt of the country, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has installed a new broadband seismic observatory in Hunza Valley, Gilgit-Baltistan, to improve real-time detection and detailed analysis of low-intensity tremors.
The new facility was set up to improve monitoring of seismic activity in the Hunza region and enable authorities to detect minor earthquakes as they occur.
Earlier, three seismic stations were operational at Gilgit, Skardu and Chilas. However, coverage in northern areas remained limited, necessitating further expansion to ensure more comprehensive surveillance.
According to the PMD, seismic monitoring in the region has been further strengthened following recent reports of explosion sounds and slight tremors in Chapursan Valley of Gilgit-Baltistan.
