God of War franchise creator David Jaffe criticized God of war, son of Spartacalling the spin-off “crap”, “stupid” and “stupid”, and does not recommend it to fans of the series.
Sony announced and the shadow fell Gods of war, sons of Spartaa 2D side-scrolling spin-off starring Kratos as a young boy, in last week’s State of Play presentation.
After playing the game for an hour, Jaffe posted a video on YouTube to express his thoughts, criticizing the game’s narrative concept, even though he was initially “great” at the side-scrolling concept.
“This is the kind of game I always wanted in terms of 2.5D God of Warsuper interested – but for me, that’s not what I was talking about,” Jaffe said. “I bought this game, it’s a $30 game, I don’t like it, I don’t recommend it.”
Jaffe then criticized the Sony executive who green-lighted the project.
“I wanted to make a video more about what they were thinking, like what were they thinking? It’s not a bad game by any means, it’s good, it controls decently… but to me the most fascinating part of it all is, why does this exist? I don’t understand.”
He then explained how he stopped playing after an hour because the characters “stopped over and over again.” [to] talk and talk”, adding: “it is not God of War“.
He also didn’t like the idea of a young Kratos, calling the version of one character a “generic f****** kid”.
“It’s probably a fucking writer saying, ‘Oh, people want to know why, how did people get like this?’ Nobody cares,” he said. “It’s a stupid idea”, he argued, because the fans “wanted something like Blasphemousat the level it’s violent, it’s bloody, it’s serious, it has the tone of the beginning God of War games.”
“If you pulled God of War and you just said, “Hey, we’re making a game about this kid,” most people would say, “That doesn’t seem like a very compelling idea for a video game character,” because it’s not. »
Despite only playing the first hour or so by the time the video was posted, Jaffe was willing to say, “Maybe it gets better, I’m sure,” adding that “there’s nothing offensive about it.”
“The only thing that offends is its genericness,” he continued. “The only thing offensive is his failure to reflect the license, the brand. It’s like if you got the John Wick license and made a movie where he’s sitting in a coffee shop talking. It could work with Keanu Reeves because he’s so compelling and the character is interesting.”
Later in the video, he expanded on this point by saying he was interested in a 2.5D model. God of War game similar to Enraged Ninja Gaiden, Neon hellOr Shinobi.
“Why would you want to post that? All it does is leave a bad taste in God of War fans’ mouths, in my opinion,” Jaffe said, before criticizing the narrative concept again.
“Every time you make a new game, you don’t have to say, ‘You know what? Let’s not go back to the great character that people love and who built this franchise. Let’s see him as a little kid, a generic boring little f******,'” the creator said. “It’s just insulting to the fans. It’s insulting to the people who worked on the games to think that this character here is what people want. It’s bullshit. It’s stupid. It’s stupid. I would say avoid the damn thing.”
The video is pretty scathing, but Jaffe continued playing for three more hours and released another lengthy video in which he criticized the game in more detail, including some technical issues he encountered, and determined that the game was “not ready for release.”
