Lyari University plans MSc, PhD, new health programs

KARACHI:

Benazir Bhutto Shaheed Lyari University has decided to launch master’s and doctoral programs in several departments, along with nursing and doctor of physiotherapy (DPT) programmes, Vice-Chancellor Prof Hussain Mehdi said in an interview to The Express PK Press Club.

He said the university expects to receive a no-objection certificate (NOC) from the Higher Education Commission in the coming days. Separately, a meeting of the university Senate, convened after 15 years, is scheduled for Wednesday to approve the institution’s budget, which has been used without formal approval during this period.

According to the Vice-Chancellor, preparations have been completed to introduce MPhil in Information Technology, PhD in Commerce and MPhil/PhD programs in English and Education. He added that upon receipt of NOC for Nursing and DPT programmes, the concerned accreditation boards will be asked to inspect the departments, after which admissions are expected to commence from the next academic session.

The Senate meeting will be chaired by Sindh Minister for Universities and Boards of Trustees Ismail Rahu.

Dr Mehdi said the ongoing reforms, academic improvements and development initiatives at the university have destabilized some vested interests, who would spread misleading propaganda. He maintained that the institution is gradually moving towards academic improvement and institutional stability.

Over the past year, the university has appointed professors, associate professors and lecturers, which has strengthened teaching and research activities. Previously, many departments lacked professors and deans, and some operated without permanent leadership.

He added that the administrative structure was also strengthened through the formal establishment of the union. Additionally, the university has signed MoUs with over 20 renowned companies.
