It’s clear that Lindsey Vonn has a long road ahead of her.

During one of her first races at the Milan Cortina Olympics earlier this month, following a torn anterior cruciate ligament she suffered a week before the Games, Vonn fell, resulting in a compound fracture of her leg.

The 41-year-old was hoping to have equipment around her neck, but instead it is now inside her body.

Vonn underwent her fifth surgery on Thursday — this one accompanied by “lots of plates and screws” that lasted more than six hours, she announced on Instagram.

“I made it through surgery…it took a little over 6 hours. As you can see it took a lot of plates and screws to put back together, but Dr. Hackett did an amazing job. Thanks Dr. Viola for the surgical assistance too!!” Vonn posted.

“With the extent of the trauma, I struggled a bit after the surgery and haven’t been able to leave the hospital yet…I’m almost there. Baby steps. That will soon explain the injury and what it all means.”
