Pakistan and the United States to strengthen counter-terrorism cooperation

WASHINGTON:

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif met US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on the sidelines of the inaugural meeting of the Peace Council in Washington, where both sides agreed to strengthen bilateral trade and economic activities as well as mutual cooperation in combating terrorism.

During the meeting, both sides highlighted the importance of strategic relations between Pakistan and the United States and expressed satisfaction with the dynamics and positive trajectory of the partnership, under the leadership of President Trump.

The Prime Minister was accompanied by Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, said a press release issued by the Prime Minister’s media wing on Friday.

The Prime Minister congratulated President Donald Trump and Secretary Rubio on the successful inaugural meeting of the Peace Council and reiterated Pakistan’s readiness to work with the Peace Council for the implementation of the Gaza Peace Plan.

He underscored the importance of continued high-level engagement between Pakistan and the United States to advance shared goals in a rapidly changing global environment.

Meanwhile, in a press release issued by the US Department of State, Secretary Rubio thanked Pakistan for its continued support of President Trump’s peace plan for Gaza and for its participation in the inaugural meeting of the Peace Council as a founding member.

He also condoled the horrific January 31 attacks in Balochistan and the devastating February 6 attack in Islamabad, reaffirming the importance of our continued partnership in the fight against terrorism.

The Secretary welcomed Pakistan’s participation in the recent Ministerial Meeting on Critical Minerals in Washington.

The officials discussed development of the critical minerals and energy sector, as well as business investment opportunities for U.S. companies.

“Met today with the Prime Minister of Pakistan (Shehbaz Sharif). We appreciate Pakistan’s continued support for @POTUS’ peace plan for Gaza and its membership in the Peace Council. During our meeting, we discussed the importance of our strategic relationship on the development of critical minerals and the fight against terrorism,” Rubio said in a social media post on ‘X’.

In response, Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar also wrote on We look forward to further strengthening our strategic partnership in all areas of common interest.”
