President Donald Trump reacted Sunday to the U.S. men’s ice hockey team’s overtime victory over Canada to win the gold medal at the 2026 Winter Games.

Jack Hughes scored the winning goal, beating Canadian goalie Jordan Binnington. It was Team USA’s first gold medal in the sport since the “Miracle on Ice” team accomplished the feat at the 1980 Olympics.

As Americans celebrated in Milan, Italy, the president responded on Truth Social.

“Congratulations to our great American ice hockey team. THEY WON GOLD. WOW!” he wrote on the social media platform.

“WHAT A GAME!!!” he added. “LOTS OF WINNERS!!!”

Trump’s political pressure on Canada has helped reignite the rivalry between the two nations on the ice. It started last year as teams from the United States and Canada faced off in the 4 Nations Showdown.

Although Cale Makar tied the score in the second period, neither team allowed a goal in the third. American goalie Connor Hellebuyck stopped 40 shots and stopped some of Canada’s best chances late in the game.
