- OpenAI could develop a ChatGPT smart speaker
- A price of $200 to $300 has been reported
- It appears that several devices are in development
We know OpenAI is working on hardware, but what form will its first gadgets take? According to a new report, the first official ChatGPT device to see the light of day will be a smart speaker with a built-in camera.
According to The Information (via The Verge), the device will cost between $200 and $300 (around £150 to £225 / AU$285 to AU$425) and will be able to recognize objects around it – as well as offering facial recognition to authorize purchases.
If the device sees the light of day sometime during 2026, it will arrive 12 years after the original Amazon Echo arrived with Alexa on board. Even though embedded AI may be very different, the form factor endures.
We don’t get many details in this latest report, although it also says that smart glasses and a smart lamp are being explored at OpenAI, as the company looks to expand ChatGPT into more areas of our daily lives.
Multiple form factors
There has been a lot of speculation about what OpenAI might be working on, in partnership with former Apple design chief Jony Ive. In January, we learned that the company may be planning to release a wearable, always-on, always-ready-to-help behind-the-ear device.
We’ve also heard that an AI-powered ChatGPT pen could be on the way, perhaps letting you record voice notes and handwritten text, and getting the built-in AI assistant to help you that way.
The general impression is that a number of devices are being considered, if not actively developed, and OpenAI will need to find the right balance between functionality, price, battery power and user privacy.
We know that dedicated AI devices haven’t worked very well so far, and even though ChatGPT attracts millions of users every day, it remains to be seen if any of us want to carry the AI chatbot with us at all times.
