Pay or we will block gutter systems, union warns

Hyderabad Water and Sewerage Corporation holds salaries and pensions for over 17 months

HYDERABAD:

The Mehran Workers’ Union of the Hyderabad Water and Sewerage Corporation has threatened to suspend the city’s water supply and drainage system from Ramadan 20 if pending salaries and pensions are not released.

If this happens, it will be a real Eid celebration, without morning showers for Eid prayers and overflowing sewers in the streets.

Union general secretary Mujtaba Aslam Abbasi and other officials said in a statement that the employees had been deprived of salary and pension for 17 months. With Ramazan underway and Eid approaching, there are only 20 working days left for the festival, and yet neither the company management nor the Mayor of Hyderabad have shown any seriousness in resolving the issue.

They recalled that Sindh Local Government Minister Syed Nasir Hussain Shah, during a recent visit to Hyderabad, had assured the union leaders in the presence of the mayor that the matter would be resolved soon. However, no progress has been made so far.

The widows of deceased employees, deprived of pension for 17 months, continue to go to the offices with their orphaned children in the hope of relief, but each time return disappointed. Working families now face hunger and poverty.
