MLB free agent Tommy Pham responded to California Governor Gavin Newsom’s recent comments about SAT scores during an event in Georgia.
In a post to his Instagram Stories on Wednesday, Pham shared a screenshot of the clip of Newsom telling the crowd: “I’m like you, I’m a 960 SAT guy. I can’t read.”

“I can’t understand that I was a straight A student and did well on my SAT, he thinks it’s black. [people] are stupid,” Pham wrote.
Newsom’s original comments drew widespread criticism on social media, as some believed his comments had racial overtones.
“I’m not trying to impress you,” Newsom said while chatting with Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens, “I’m just trying to impress you, ‘I’m just like you. I’m not better than you.’ I’m a 960 SAT guy.”
In another story, Pham reshared a screenshot of an excerpt of Newsom speaking on his podcast to journalist Jonathan Allen and Amie Parnes about their 230-page book “Fight,” in which Newsom claimed to have completed the entire book in less than two and a half hours.
PK Press Club Digital has reached out to Newsom’s office for a response.
“You’ve written a hell of a book and I don’t say that lightly, and in an hour and a half, almost two hours, and believe me, I’m not ready very quickly, but it reads at an incredible pace,” Newsom told reporters, both of whom were white.
A snippet of this quote has resurfaced in recent days as many critics have pointed out the contrast between Newsom’s comments about his reading skills and his discussion with Dickens.
Newsom defended himself in a post on Monday, arguing that he was speaking strictly about his dyslexia.
“At first MAGA made fun of his dyslexia, and now they’re calling him racist for talking about his low SAT scores,” Newsom spokesperson Izzy Gardon told PK Press Club Digital in response to criticism of the clip.
“This is a MAGA-made scandal. The governor has been saying it publicly for years – including with Charlie Kirk and dozens of other audiences. The same people who excused or ignored Trump’s racist video can fuck off.”

Many defended Newsom on social media, pointing out his dyslexia, and Mayor Dickens responded to the controversy in a statement. Instagram post saying, “It wasn’t an attack on anyone. It was a moment of vulnerability in relation to her own journey.”
“Trying to attribute that to dyslexia is something that is completely different from what he intended to say,” Rankin said. “He sincerely believes that black people, black Americans, are intellectually inferior. That’s where his comments came from. »
