- A Redditor bought a 32GB Corsair RAM kit for $300
- They ended up receiving 10 of these kits
- That’s a total of 320 GB of RAM, or $3,000 worth of memory (actually, more based on current pricing)
We’re seeing a marked increase in scams around RAM sales recently – now that DDR5 is so expensive, it’s inevitable – but here’s something that worked the other way, and this time in the buyer’s favor.
As posted on Reddit, someone ordered a 32GB capacity Corsair Vengeance DDR5 RAM kit, paying $300 for the privilege.
What they received, however, was a box of 10 of these 32GB kits, which is of course worth $3,000 – based on the price apparently paid, which seems cheap anyway. (If we look at Newegg in the US right now, for example, the cheapest Corsair Vengeance DDR5 kits I can see are around $400, so this RAM stack actually sells for just over three grand in theory).
We must of course be careful whether this is an authentic story or whether it was fabricated for attention. Obviously there’s no real proof, although the photo of the stack of RAM kits in the box looks pretty authentic – but that’s all we can really say here.
So, arm yourself with plenty of seasoning, but while this kind of mistake is probably very rare, it can happen – but usually not on this scale.
Analysis: warehouse problems?
Assuming this is a true story of an error in executing an order, how could such an error occur? Clearly, there was an error in the inventory system somewhere, and as other editors discussing the incident conclude, it was probably an error in the warehouse where a staff member scanned the box of 10 kits as a single item – and no one higher up the chain thought to check that.
Either way, the reality for most of us is that buying RAM is now a miserable affair, especially DDR5 – and you’re far more likely to run into a scam than any type of error like this.
That said, these things happen, and there’s another poster in the Reddit thread who claims a friend received five RAM kits when he ordered one – and contacted Amazon to inform them of the error. Apparently: “Amazon customer service basically told him to keep them because it was their mistake, offered to send 4 back and they just told him it didn’t matter.”
As for what the Redditor who received these 10 kits will do, he says, “I’m selling to the community for less than the new inflated MSRP.” »
As another Reddit user put it, “My guy is here, Robin Hoodmaxxing,” and that’s an understandable sentiment given how painful the price of RAM is – but of course, there could be other potential ramifications (pun not intended) with this seller’s fallacy approach.
